Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Write a letter to the President of Haiti to
explain why the textile companies should join the Fair Trade* Federation.

Earthquake catastrophe in Haiti
Tuesday afternoon, January 12th, 2010 the worst earthquake in
200 years — 7.0 in magnitude — struck less than ten miles from
the Caribbean city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Now the two million Haitians living in squalid makeshift camps
— and countless others living in the homes of generous family
and friends — need jobs. They don’t want handouts or donations;
they just want money so they can feed themselves.
“We are willing to work — work hard — for money, but we need
jobs, “ said Joseph Cangas, a coordinator at a new camp in Corail.

International aid for Haiti
To help Haiti recover from the catastrophe, the international community
and business leaders have helped develop the garment
industry on the island.
The figures:
- price paid in a US store for 1 suit: $ 550
- factory profit margins: 22 %
- a garment worker’s pay: $ 3.09 a day
Example of how one woman uses her pay:
- 1 cup of rice + transport to & from work
- she sleeps on the street
Wear fair trade*!
It is better for people and the environment, and you can feel good
wearing clothing that is produced with quality of product, as well
as quality of life, in mind.
