To what extent US myths are true?

The American dream is in fact that everybody can became rich and prosper to start from the bottom. This myth influenced lot of people and continues to do well.

I’m going to introduce several documents to what extent American dream is true.

In first part, I will use two documents; The Bald Eagle and The Uncle Sam to show a good side of American dream.

Secondly, I will use photography The Louisville Flood to prove the bad part of the myth.

First, the American blazon The Bald Eagle send message of power and peace that can suggest nation will protect newcomers. Indeed, the eagle had the reputation to be strong, powerful, intelligent and ruthless with his enemies. We can see on the blazon, on right of eagle there are olive branch which symbolize peace and on the left side several arrow who represents war. His beak is turn to the right to show American is nation of peace but it will not hesitate to fight for protection of the nation. This is a good aspect of US.

On the second cartoon, we see Uncle Sam, the common national of personification of the American government. He is surrounded by lot of migrants who are working hard for him. This draw suggests that there is enough work for all of new migrants. But, it’s evident, immigrants do unskilled job. So, they have really access to wealth and prosperity or just only the right to hard job ?

On the last black and white picture dated 1937 named Louisville Flood, we are shocked by the paradox between the advertisement beyond the queue and the miserable lifes of immigrants. Indeed, we see a perfect picture which represents misery of immigrants. We see black people who are queuing up for something. Title shows they probably were victims by a catastrophe, a flood. They are in the poverty and maybe must rely on charities to survive. And picture beyond them shows a perfect white American happy family in a nice car and the motto “There is no way like American way” is a real contrast too.

When country is in construction it need brave hands to work hard. From 1892 to 1954 over 12 million immigrants entered the US though Ellis Island, from nations such as England, Ireland, Germany … etc for different reasons as political instability and most of them have been admitted because US needed them. Finally, immigrants wait for something different, they dream on ideal country which doesn’t exist.
