Introduction:

Long considered a myth, the lucid dream returns to the front of the stage. It arouses interest un science and therefore marks the beginning of a new area for dream specialists. In this review, we have decided to scan all the possibilities that the lucid dream offers us.

What is the lucid dream?

Most of the time, were are not aware of our dreams. The reality of the oneiric world appears like undeniable. Thus, there is a loss of consciousness,  loss of the ability to criticize the scenario even in front of flagrant inconsistency. A lucide dream (LD) is defined as a dream during wich dremaers, while dreaming, are aware they are dreaming. This occurs psontaneously in some people. Some LD are more lucide than others, the level of lucidity starts form the simple fact of realizinf that one is dreaming to control the dream. Tholey, German psychologist, describe 7 levels of lucidity:

Lucidity intensity level

Characteristics  of lucidity

1

Dream where you know you are dreaming

2

Free choice

3

Ability to reason

4

Clarity on waking life

5

Clarity of the perception of the five senses

6

Clarity of the dream

7

Clarity, capacity to keep dream in memory

The lucid dreamer exerts significant influence without control entirety of her dream. There are 45% of the population who never did LD and 2,2% are frequent lucid dreamer.

 The initial research :

The first research on the topic dates back 1867. Marquis d’Hervey collects his own dreams et becomes lucid dreamer a few months later.

The lucid dream term has been used for the first time by Van Eeden in 193. Then, he gave it his own definition: “the sleeper remembers his waking life and his own condition, until achieves a level self-awareness, and to be in capacity to direct his attention and control the different actions by is will”. A decade later, researchers in psychology and inpsychophysiology, like Laberge, were able to show this particular state of consciousness scientifically, in the years 1970. A team has accustomed subjects to emitting an eye index visible to the EOG ( 2 eye movements right- left) which indicate their entries in LD. The subjet who has become lucid recovers its memory functions. This allows him to have access to his personal information and to voluntarily realize his actions and intentions during the dream.

 LD : Complex phenomenon

LD is a phenomenon requiring particular conditions. So, many factors influence LD such as the quality of sleep wich needs to be sufficient for te achievement of LD but which also makes it possible to remember the dream. The memory of the dream is variable according to several factors such as age, sex, personal interest, the environmental context, professional worship but also the visual and creative capacities. It is estimated that a person with creative personalities has a better quantitative dream recall rate. On average the general population remembers 2 dreams a week.

There are different induction techniques. According to a literature review of 2012, 3 techniques stand out the most: Mild (Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams); WILD (wake Induce Lucid Dream); DILD (Dream Induce Lucid Dream)
