I’m going to deal with the notion “the idea of progress” who can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place. We are talking more and more about global warming, which is proving to be a major issue in the 21st century. Firstly, I will be interested in its causes and then in the solutions that we can bring.

As you have seen, many disasters occur around the world and it's sometimes because of global warming. For instance in California the water is getting scarcer and scarcer because of droughts leading to deadly fires, in Australia we observe very highheatwave hitting the coast or the Maldives islands will be submerged by the rising waters.

The situation is critical, the ice cap is melting and this is the cause of our excessive consumption of greenhouse gas. The co2 molecules damage the ozone layer which protects us from an excessive intensity of the sun. Energy like coal or oil are dangerous and today with globalization, we are reliant on transport and ongiant factories. But that's not the only cause of pollution, indeed the rejection of plastic in the sea is very problematic because, in addition to participating in global warming, it destroys ecosystems.

Even though people are more and more aware and if some take part in demonstration we have to using media to spread information and join organisations like Greenpeace to prick people's consciousness. But it's mostly up to states to act. To solve climate change, the big counties have to put international agreements and set example and target. We must stop our use of fossil fuels and start to be eco-friendly. There are alternatives, and sustainable development is one of them. Nowadays, thanks to technology, there is effective renewable energy like the wind power, the solar energy or the tidal energy. We must take a turn for the wise by stopping to be fossil addictedand begin to sort out our waste.

To conclude, I would say that every body have to feel concerned, become climate smart and get involved in the protection of the environment because we have only one planet.
