The notion I’m going to deal with is Spaces and exchanges. To begin with, I’d like to give a definition of the notion. A space is a place with frontiers or not, like a country, a city. An exhange is an act of giving and receiving something else in return. It can also be seen as a continuous movement or circulation. An exchange can take several forms like economic, cultural or movement of people. To illustrate this notion, I’ve chosen to talk about immigration in the USA. We may wonder to what extent immigration may be considered as a form of exchange. First we will explain why people are migrating to the US with a hidden camera report titled « Footage on Mexicans crossing borders », then we will talk about the consequences of immigration thanks to the text « a silent of majority ».

Over the last decade, the US-Mexico border has been a contraversial issue. Indeed, the border act like a magnet for Mexican who dream of a better life in the USA, because Mexican often live in poor living conditions and prefer to flee. What shows us hidden camera report, titled « Footage on Mexicans crossing the border », where a journalist puts himself in the sohes of a Mexican and will try with them to cross the border. This is very difficult, dangerous and risky, because they are at the mercy of the counter-bandiers, wild animals, and above all they must escape the guards. Some Mexicans express their goal of going to the USA. One of them says he dreams of sending some money to his family staying in Mexico, and another that he would like to live in comfort and watch TV. So, America attracts people like a magnet because, for most people who live in miserable conditions in their native countries, the USA symbolizes a land of opportunities where you can start from scratch and rise in the social scase.

This immigration has a lot of consequences in the USA. First of all, part of the American economy seems to be based on this unskilled work force labour ready to endure difficult working conditions in restaurants, fast-foods, or as farm labourers. So migrants represent a workforce that can do the hard work that American citizens would not do. Moreover, immigration tends to create a multicultural society. Indeed, the text "a silent majority" dealing with the German cultural influence thanks to immigration, shows one of the impacts of immigration on the USA. During the Second World War, there was a strong period of immigration of people wanting to escape Nazism. These people imported with them their culture, their language and their know-how in the USA. Thus, the Germans have influenced the American food thanks to the hots-dogs, beers, and pretzels. It has also made it possible to set up kindergarten in America, which are a German education system. So it has been a cultural exchange between Germany and th USA. Nowadays, immigration has brought to the USA a multiculturality that brings a better open mind to the people. This allows you to discover new cultures, new languages, and even the creation of a new language like Spanglish. Each immigrant brings with him a little of his native country, which creates a cultural enrichment of the USA.

To conclude, the USA remains a popular destination attracting about 20 percent of the world’s internationnal migrants, even as it represents less than 5 percent of the global population. In addition, the USA is a country based on immigration thanks to the European colonization in particular. And even if immigration is a controversial issue, immigration can create workforce labor, change the culture of a country, and bring an open mind and the world around us. For me, immigration, whether forced or not, helps to improve one's linguistic knowledge, to bring new know-how and new ideas to a country.
