Sujet du devoir

Bonjour,

I am going to talk about the notion “spaces and exchanges”.

First of all, I would like to give a definition of this notion. A space can be geographical areas, for example the borders between two countries or virtual space as Internet. Then, the exchanges can differ in many forms: people, culture, language, media.

In order to illustrate this notion, I have chosen to talk about migrant caravan and attempt to answer the question: Is the American Dream become a nightmare?

To answer this question, first we will talk about the American Dream of migrants. Then, we will see that it is quickly transform in nightmare.

First, since October 2018, thousands of migrants have joined the US-Mexico border after travelling thousands of miles from Central America.

They are fleeing persecution, poverty and violence in their home countries of Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

The first document I have chosen is a video taken by a journalist of The Guardian entitled "On the road with the migrant caravan". He has meet migrants, and he explains the difficulties of their trek. Through this video the journalist wants to show us the hope of migrants to reach the United States. We see only smiling faces. A woman says: "It is been tiring, difficult but we are always looking ahead". She describes this family like "Smiling, happy, always joking around". We can see also many children. Some woman has obligated to carry their baby when she walks. It is so difficult, but everybody keep smile. We learn in this video that the migrants search a better future for themselves and their families. Many wants to find a work in United States with a better wage than Latin America. In United States, they want claim asylum. This video perfectly illustrates the idea of "spaces and exchanges" since it shows the travel of Latin America population for join the United States. In the second document, a photography taken by Edgard Garrido, we can see a young man, we look far away. He is pictured after crossing the river to avoid a border checkpoint in Mexico. He has a tee-shirt with the American flag. We can think that he dreams of arrive in America for obtain a better life.

However, their American Dream is quickly transformed in a nightmare. Indeed, we learn in the last document, an article of Newsweek written by a PhD candidate at the University of California, that Donald Trump, the president of United States refuses to welcome migrants. He has claimed, erroneously, that the migrants "have to" claim asylum in Mexico first. It is a real obstacle course for migrants. They must succeed to past the borders, walk many days, survive. We see in many media terrible photography of migrants who risk their life to continue their way in order to get to United States.  And finally, when they think have find the happiness and freedom, we return them in their countries where they are in danger. They must prove that in their home countries, they are persecuted, and they can't live in security. The three Northern Triangle countries -El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala- are in the top five most frequently denied, with more than 75 percent of claims being refused. This article has for goal to criticizes the system to claim asylum in America. So, in all three documents, the idea put forward is the difficulties to exchanges of population in America. It is hard to migrate in United States and the migrants are not welcome. Therefore, the American Dream they follow become a nightmare.

To conclude, I really enjoyed informing me about this subject since I am very interested by this question. I find the video is touching due to the fact the people live in the misery but keep the smile. They have hope to arrive in United States. However, this trek is a nightmare which continue for them. The United States will stay a dream for the majority and become memory of a nightmare for the others. Finally, we may wonder if the government have the power of life or death on the migrants.
