Sujet du devoir

Hello, I'm going to present to you the notion ''idea of progress''. Firstly, I think is very important to define terms of this notion. The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change. It can be a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place. We are particularly going to study the technical, scientific progress and the consequences on the society. The last few years, the technical and the scientific fields does not stop progressing. To illustrate this notion I have chosen to talk about the genetic progress and the genetic selection. We know today that genetic progress raises ethic issues and the genetic selection is controversial, especially when it comes to human beings. So it's questionable to what extent does progress change our vision of the mankind? Firstly, we'll see the genetic progress and secondly we'll see the genetic selection. To answer this question, we are going to use 4 documents: an extract from the novel Brave new world by Aldous Huxley in 1932 in the manual meeting point p63, a cartoon called Odd man out in the manual meeting point p62, and two article written in 2010 presents in this manual p64, from CHS globale Online and the USA today.

Genetic progress is a scientific progress which allows to modify the genetic program and to create a genetically modified organism. Cracking the genetic code allowed us to study diseases at the molecular level, which is increasing our knowledge of potential preventions and treatments for diseases. Indeed, genetics has become central to the science of medicine. Genetic progress allows to know better about genes. Thus, it allows to know better genetic diseases and in this way, to know how we can cure them. It can also help many people to have better life. Indeed, genetic progress permits to avoid diseases that are incurable with medical treatments. It's the case for example for prenatal diagnosis which can detect genetic diseases and thus a pregnancy can be interrupted. The genetic progress also permits to cure genetic diseases thanks some technics, for example if a couple has a child who has a mortal genetic disease, they can choose to design a medicine baby who can save his/her brother/sister. That's the case for Molly Nash, she was saved by his brother because he gave him his cord blood, he is born for that. Now we can also choose how will be our future baby, we can choose the color of his hair, if he will be a sportsman... The article in the CHS Globe Online illustrates this.

Yes, thanks to the progress we can save people but when we add all this, we can see that the human being became the goods. We choose criteria of the human, while there is not.

When it comes to the genetic traits of a population, 'selection' is the process that chooses those traits. Artificial selection involves human interference in natural selection. With the cartoon Odd man out, we can see a criticism of the genetic selection. We can see 5 men on a conveyor belt. In the center there is a small fair-haired man, he is surrounded with very big and very muscular men. They are very beautiful and very sports unlike this man, below, to the right of the cartoon, we can see a dumpster with people who look like the fair-haired man. They are thrown in the dumpster as waste, and we can see writing in the dumpster ClonesRus and Rejects. People like him are thrown. They do not accept the difference, he wants everybody to be alike as clones, while the human beings are different and that's what makes the beauty of the human.

To conclude and for answer the question, I think the progress change our vision of the mankind because now we can choose, what looks like the human being. The progress in evolved, just like our vision of the human being. Personally I think it's very dangerous. because we can lose what for me returns the human man, the morality.
