I was not brought up by anybody. No one seemed to care for me till I was able to work. No one ever spoke of my father or mother, but I learned that a curse was attached to my race, thaht my African blood would forever exclude me from the higher walks of life. This seemed hard to bear, because my complexion was almost white. Thought negleted and a slave, I had a desire for knowledge. Wihtout books and teachers and schools I determined to learn. I was aware thaht my master never permitted his slaves to be baught. Slaves were slaves to him. He regarded them not as men and women, but in the same light as horses or other domestics animals. He supplied their necessities of food and clothing, but discounted the ideas of equality and fraternity as absurd. But " where there's a will there's a way"
As I was employed about the house, my labors were much easier than those of the field servants, and I enjoyed intervals of rest. Then, too, I was a child and some hours of each day were alloted to play. While the other children of the house were amusing themselves, I would quietly leave their company to look at some old book or newspaper, hoping that some day I would understand them.

One day, I was sitting beneath a large tree, when an aged white woman approached me. She was the wife of a poor sand-digger. she smilled and asked why I concealed my book. I told her all.
"Child" she said, "come to me each day. I will teach you to read".
"Where do you live?' I inquired.
"In the little cottage at the foot of the hill" she replied.
"I will come" I answered joyfully "But if master finds it out his anger will be terrible; and then can't pay you".
she smiled quietly, and went her way.
The next day I went out to gather blackberries, and took this opportunity t visit my instructress and receive my first lesson.
"Hannah, my dear, you are welcome" she said. "I rejoice to see you. I am, or rather was a northerm woman, and have no prejudices against your birth, or race, or condition" I sat silent and embarrassed ...
She and her husband not only taught me to read. They cultivated my moral nature. How I wished to be with all the time-How I entreated them to buy me, but in vain ! They had not the means

_ Hannah! How come are you able to read? Slaves can’t read! Give me this book!
No Master please! This is my book!
- Tell me how you learned to read! Tell me it right now!
- Master, I am so sorry to offend you! This is a very nice White couple! The husband is a sand digger. His wife taught me to read. It’s a very nice couple! They love me and respect me for what I am
- Slaves are not allowed to read! They are animals! They are good for nothing! Their place is in the cotton fields not in a library!! Give me this book right now!
- Hannah sobbing: No master, please! This is my book! This is a present from this couple! I love reading! I would spend hours reading books; it is so interesting! I love books!
- You are just insane! A slave is stupid and cannot read. Reading is useless for a slave! A slave is too dumb to understand one single word! So you do not need a book anymore! Give it to me and I will destroy it! Go back to your duties! The master takes the book away from Hannah. Hannah leaves the room for the cotton field.
