Où j'en suis dans mon devoir

The notion "Spaces and exchanges" deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between men. An exchange is to give up or to part with something or transfer something for an equivalent, this equivalent or other something can be money, ideas, gifts and all other possibilities. A space is an interval of distance or time between two points, objects, events or people. Among the whole of the propositions offered by the notion "spaces and exchanges", I chose to speak about immigration, mainly between the United States and Mexico. The question we will ask now is this: What are the reasons of immigration? Firstly, we will look at the causes of immigration, then we will talk about the motivations of people to immigrate to the USA, the dangers of the trip and why life was better for immigrants in the USA than in their country of origin, and finally, we will talk about the American dream.

Firstly, the reasons are many to immigrate whether in the past or now. In the past, the 1900s, Europe has experienced problems lead have some people to immigrate to the United States mainly. The problems were as the potatoes famine in Ireland, in Germany the political upheavals, in Scandinavia Land Shortages, in Central Europe the Anti-Semitism, and in Western Europe the massive unemployment due to industrial revolution. But now things have changed and it is not entirely for the same reasons that people decide to leave their country. But we can be another form as be on the run of war in their country, the poverty and all. Some reasons are the same as unemployment, which creates insecurity and therefore people will look to leave the country to live a better life in better living conditions. We saw in an oral comprehension between a journalist and Alejandro Perez in coming to live in the US for the same trade, he earned 8 to 10 times more. And that its objective by leaving his country was to give a better education to his son and bring his family to the United States with him.

Secondly, the document "La odisea de los cayucos" is the report realize by Dominique Molar. This report is about immigration in Spain. People immigrated to Spain because they were looking for riches, freedom, and a better life and because they were escaping from poverty, political oppression and economic hardship in their own countries. The immigrants had to face a lot of dangers and difficulties on their way to Spain. They had to save up money for the trip. They had to leave their home country and say goodbye to people they loved and would never see again. They had to travel to the ports of embarcation. On the way, they could be attacked by outlaws. Sometimes, they had to stop on the way in order to work for food. They had to wait in the ports until they found a boat. The trip was very long, hard and dangerous. There were storms, boats were not very strong at that time. They could get ill and die on the way or drown.

Thirdly, the American dream is the notion that the American social, economic, and political system makes success possible for every individual. Someone who manages to achieve their version of the American dream is said to be “living the dream”. Many people criticize the idea of the American dream because they say that it is impossible for everyone to be able to fulfil their dreams – there are still inequalities in class, race, religion and ethnicity preventing people from “living the dream”. The idea of the American dream is older than the USA itself – it dates back to the 1600s, when people began to have hopes for what was a new and largely unexplored continent to European immigrants. People dreamt of owning land and establishing a prosperous business and hoped that this would make them happier. Today’s the definition of the American dream is much different. Most people nowadays hope that they will get married, have children and live in a nice home. Rather than looking for great wealth or success, people hope to avoid poverty or loneliness.

To conclude, I would say that the dream of all people living in poverty to get out and live what others have a chance to live. Everyone dreams of a life in good conditions and without this kind of problems. Of course sometimes it is image given to them and that may be false when they arrive in the country be it the US or Spain or another. Inserting Ole can be very difficult for them and therefore make life very complicated causes of these differences, this discrimination.
