In “Lamb for the Slaughter”, by Roald Dahl, Mary Maloney has committed the perfect crime. Firstly, Mary used an unusual weapon, a big frozen leg of lamb. The narrator said it himself: “She might just as well have hit him with a steel club.” That has been the thought of the police officers in charge of the investigation. They only thought about a weapon in heavy metal. Furthermore, mare had the good reflex to create an alibi for herself, so the detectives couldn’t have a motive for suspecting her. Indeed, with the grocer’s deposition, the detectives finally assumed that she wasn’t a murderess. Moreover, any ulterior proof against Mary would have been insufficient to incriminate her, due to the fact that she made the weapon, the frozen lamb with her fingerprints on it, disappear.
