INTRO:

The notion I’m going to deal with is « idea of progress », first of all I’m going to give a definition of this notion.                                                                                                                    The idea of progess can be defined as a developpement or a change, a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to make the world a better place. Examples can be scientific progress like medical advances, communication progress such as internet and social media or human rights.                                                                   I would like to illustrate this notion thought the themes of medical progress and cultural advance.                                                                                                                  We may answer the question: should we fear progress?                                                                                                                 In order to illustrate this notion I have chosen 2 documents, first I will focus on a text named Design your baby before finally concentrate on a second text named “Letter to Mama”.

DEVELOPPEMENT:

The first document is an extract of a web article about genetic engineering more precisely about a procedure named PGD. This procedure goal is to “design a baby”, it looks like a fast food order, you can choose the height, eyes color, if he will have blue eyes or even his IQ and personality. It sounds nice in one way but it could be dangerous because it can be use for bad reasons like cosmetic use or just in way to create new humans who will be nearly perfect. This is currently seen on science fiction movies but it could be our really tomorrow.                                       This text highlighted the negative aspect of genetic engineering but it exist a positive aspect to this procedure, we can see it in an other text we have seen in class.                                                              In this article, which is about PGD too, we learn that thanks to this procedure scientists can now predict if an embryos is carrier of a genetic disease. Also this article explain us that thanks to PGD a family could give birth to a baby with immune system characteristics (feature) that made him an ideal transplant candidate for his sister, this procedure save the little girl’s life.                     The scientific progress keeps growing all the time, but it’s not the only one, other types of progress go to the common direction.

Now I would like to talk about an extract of a novel titled “More Tales of the City” about the subject of homosexuality.                                                                                                                          Micheal, the main character, decides to wrote a letter to his mother, even if he knew that he and his parents had opposite point of view, he decided to come out of the closet and confess to his parents that he is gay. He wanted to tell them the truth for longtime but when he learn that his mother was part of the Save Our Children campaign, which is an homophobic organization, he decided (wanted) to unburden himself of this secret.                                               In this document the author denounces the behavior of our today’s societies upon persons who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, for them it is not easy every day. For example in France, even if 65% of people are favorable to marriage for everyone, homophobia is constantly growing, it’s a paradox. Besides in some cases people had to move to live happily, like Micheal who decided to move in San Francisco because people in here are more tolerant than in Orlando, also San Francisco’s nickname is “gay capital”.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, progress exist in different sectors like science, communication, technology, education, human right and culture. People are more and more open minded to technologic progress but when it touch our culture, our tradition like marriage people become narrow-minded and refuse changes.                                                                To my mind, we shouldn’t fear progress, it make things evolve, permit to save life in medicine for example, to have more comfort such as the electricity but we should use progress intelligently, because if we don’t it could end dramatically, we can compare progress to  a knife, if we use it in the wrong way we could be injured.
