Sujet du devoir

Bonjour,

Dear Hannah,

I'd like to tell you my exceptional stay in the USA, more exactly on the Cherokee reservation in North Carolina. This tribe includes around eight thousand people who speak English but some of them also speak their native language.

When I arrived here, I was warmly greeted by the principal chief Bill John baker, who led the Cherokee nation with a tribal council. Even if this tribe is organized with its own government, laws and police, it musts obey American law because the Cherokee are also US citizens.

Next, I had the opportunity to admire magnificent forests ,lakes , along with the splendid « Smoke Mountains » and I was extremely impressed by the beauty of the landscapes .It was so magic !

Moreover, I was very surprised because before this trip, I thought they lived in tepees and hunted buffaloes whereas most of these indians live in modern houses and go to fast-food restaurants now ! Nevertheless, most of them suffer from poverty today. These live among garbage in dilapidated houses and they don't have running water.

I also discovered that ceremonies are very important for them . For example, they celebrate harvests at the beginning of each year during the "Green Corn Ceremony".

In the past, these sedentary indians lived in the west of the Gulf of Mexico. They had a sacred relationship with the sun, that's why they built many temples where they prayed their divinity. They lived in small villages next to fields where they used to cultivate corn, marrows and beans. They also used to practise basketwork and make earthenwares, but they especially used to hunt stags, moose and bears or fish thanks to harpoons or nets. However, during the Gold Rush, this nation was forced to leave their lands and they moved to Oklahoma because the white settlers wanted to find more gold. Today, this deportation is known as The Trail of Tears.

That's all for now !

Léo
