Border States kick the immigration debate into high gear.

Two weeks ago the artist Judi Werthein walked right in the middle of this controversy, hoping to make his mark with a special "crossing trainer" she has designed to help illegal immigrants negotiate the terrain, they sometimes fatal encounter when crossing the border from Mexico to the United States. Night after night, Werthein decided to go near the border with shoe boxes in his arms to meet the dark migrants waiting to hop the border fence from Tijuana to San Diego. Whenever she appeared, they emerged from their makeshift homes in rusted cars and the concrete channel that runs parallel to the fence of the border and called on their shoes sizes. Some had waited for months in the ground that no man for their chance to go in San Diego. The artist was commissioned by a cross-border arts exhibition to develop a project that "intervened" in some aspects of frontier life. While looking for his project, the native of Argentina became fascinated by the way illegal immigrants' primary mode of transportation - their feet. Migrants call the act of crossing the "brinco" - literally "jump" in Spanish. And who is the inspiration for the shoes to cross Werthein called brincos.
"If they go through the sierra, they walk eight hours. Their feet get hurt. There are many stones and tarantulas so it is a small bunch, "The Brinco is green, red, black and yellow ankle trainer. An Aztec eagle is embroidered on the heel. On the toe is the American eagle found on the U.S. quarter, to represent the American dream the migrants are chasing.
A map - printed on removable insole of the shoe - shows the most popular illegal routes from Tijuana to San Diego.
Brincos are adorned with unusual items "and include a compass, a flashlight because people cross at night, and some Tylenol painkillers are also included inside because many people are injured during the crossing,"
A few days after the passage of the shoes for free to migrants, Werthein begins selling shoes in a store trainer hip boutique in downtown San Diego.
The shop sold only in a limited edition trainers. A pair of Werthein brincos were displayed on a pedestal under glass with a price tag of $ 215 (£ 125).
Although the store is only about 15 miles (24 km) of Tijuana, the crowd sipping champagne, given the Brinco as a vehicle for discussion - not transport.
Andrea Schmidt, La Jolla, is to buy a pair to display in her living room.
"I think they are historical. It is a very special problem. And I thought it was important to have them," she said.
But her husband, Joe, thinks her purchase crosses a line.
"It does give them an incentive to come. Because they are probably the best shoes they've ever had in their lives."
Werthein dismisses complaints that it is complicit in illegal immigrants.
She contends that she is just causing a major discussion. The real incentive for illegal immigrants is the demand of Americans for cheap labour. "She said
