The plague has at last subsided in London after killing between 70,000 and 100,000 people, up to one in five of the population. The worst month was Sepember, when over a thousand died every day, by official count. In fact the toll was much higher. King Charles II, the court and parliament all fled the city, as did leading clergymen, lawyers and doctors. The poor living in crowded and insanitary parts of the city were worst afflicted.
By government order each house in wich plague was found was shut up with is residents inside. Entire families were left to die in infected houses. These were marked with red sosses, and every day men with carts passed trough the streets crying, "Bring out your dead!"and took away the bodies for burial in plague-pits. Public meetings were banned, fairs were cancelled, and bonfires were set in the streets to purge the air.
Plague is thought to come from a miasma emanating from the earth. There is no kown cure mor any means of prevention. There have been many outbreaks in the past century, but this was by far the worst.
