The Space race

Contrary to what everyone believe the space race began in Germany during the WWII. In fact, Hitler had a considerable advantage over his enemies: he was already in possession of V1 and V2 missiles, launchers's  prototype of the Space Age. It is for this reason that engaged a mad race for the conquest of Germany between the Americans and the Soviets in order to appropriate these technologies and the scientists who had designed ( ex : Wernher von Braun Nazy engineer of the SS, inventor of the V2 missile he became oneof the major players in the American space race ) . The Cold War began soon after the war, has been opposing the Americans against the Soviets in all areas and on all fronts including in space. The total budget for the conquest of space by the U.S. exceeded 150 billion dollars (in dollar value in 2005). Why have they spent so much money in a program as hazardous and uncertain fallen? We will explore military, political, economic and scientific issues, while by measuring the consequences of the Space Race until today.

I) History and background of the space race

After the Second World War, the Soviets have made their first atomic bomb in 1949 (due to the spying on Americans). That's why they developed a wide space program in order to increase the effective range of their nuclear weapons. On October 4, 1957, the Soviets sent the first artificial satellite into orbit named Sputnik 1, which calls into question the technological superiority of the United States. However the news were largely amplified in the U.S. media (with fear), whereas in the USSR where newspapers do not talk about, probably in order to prepare the American public to increase the budget for the aerospace  ( creation of NASA July 29, 1958 ).

From 1957 to 1965, the space belongs the the Russians, they are at their apogee. In November 1957 they sent for the first time a living being in space: the dog Laika. In1959, the first three spacecraft to leave Earth's orbit are sent to the moon: Luna I, II and Luna III. Then April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin was the first man sent into space, at this time the Soviets are the masters of space. Nevertheless, a series of failed launches, and reduced funding will result in the loss of their supremacy space, their last success being the first output of a cosmonaut in the vacuum of space in 1965.
While the space program was on the brink on several occasions in 1961 (failure to launch several rockets) and 1967 (death of three of their astronauts), they still manage to overcome obstacles that are sent and for the first time astronauts around the moon in1968, and July 16, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man walked on the moon.
Therefore the Americans deal a decisive blow to the Soviets and won a race technological premise of the decline of the USSR.

II) Issues of the space race in the Cold War

A) Military and political issues

The main objective of the space race is military, it has significantly increased the reach of nuclear missiles (the missile crisis in Cuba in 1962 is a direct consequence of the advanced technology of the conquest of space). Satellites have allowed the spy remotely by taking detailed photographs of any point on earth from space, but also the wireless remote, and they occur very largely into the program "star wars" of President Reagan. The space race has allowed the discovery of Kevlar, the laser and dozens of other innovations to military use.
Technological advance has allowed the space race has attracted a significant psycologic advantage over their enemies (Sputnik was in evidence). The United States and the Soviet Union have both joined the race to prove to the world that its system was the best. They saw in space a very good way to demonstrate this superiority. Especially since this race has allowed everyone to considerably increase their prestige and indirectly their influences the world ( with the propaganda ).

B) Economic and scientist issues

The economic spin-offs and science that has allowed the race to space are considerable and exceed anything you can imagine. In fact, the hundreds to billions of dollars spent were not wasted: it spent $ 1 $ 3 reported a yield to 300%. By themselves, the technologies developed by NASA have resulted in some 1,600 innovations in other areas, often far from their original destination. As for the European Space Agency(ESA), its technology transfer program boasts more than 200 applications derived.Solar panels, titanium pump ventricular assist, GPS, survival blanket, Medical Imaging,Teflon, composite materials, fireproof textiles are only a small part of the technological contributions to the conquest spatial. These innovations have saved tens of thousands of lives improved  and those of millions more while only 22 astronauts have died on a mission. Millions of jobs have been created directly or indirectly by the space race, NASA today employs almost 500,000 people the United States.

While the U.S. space program has been abandoned by the Obama administration ( in 2010 ) and that sending American astronauts will be through the Soyuz rocket, the question of American supremacy in space challenged by emerging powers like China or India is becoming increasingly current. Will not do that by creating a large space program(Mars, for example) and technological innovations that the U.S. could get out of the current crisis?

The Space race

Contrary to the popular belief, the space race began in Germany during the WWII. In fact, Hitler had a considerable advantage over his enemies: he was already in possession of V1 and V2 missiles, launchers's prototype of the Space Age. It is for this reason that the Americans and the Soviets engaged a mad race to conquest Germany in order to get these technologies and the scientists who had designed (for instance: Wernher von Braun Nazy engineer of the SS, inventor of the V2 missile he became one of the major players in the American space race ) . The Cold War began soon after the war, opposed the Americans against the Soviets in all areas and on all fronts including in space. The total budget for the space conquest by the U.S. exceeded 150 billion dollars (in dollar value in 2005). Why did they spend so much money in a program as hazardous and uncertain as the space conquest? We will study all the military, political, economic and scientific issues raised by this race, and will also assess the consequences of the Space Race until today.

I) History and background of the space race

After the Second World War, the Soviets made their first atomic bomb in 1949 (due to the spying on Americans). That's why they developed a wide space program in order to increase the effective range of their nuclear weapons. On October 4, 1957, the Soviets sent the first artificial satellite into orbit called Sputnik 1, which calls into question the technological superiority of the United States. However the news were largely broadcasted in the U.S. media (with fear), whereas in the USSR no newspapers talked about, probably in order to prepare the American citizens to an increase in the budget for the aerospace ( creation of NASA July 29, 1958 ).

From 1957 to 1965, the space belonged the the Russians, they reached their apogee. In November 1957 they sent a living being in space for the very first time : it was the dog Laika. In1959, the first three spacecrafts to leave the Earth's orbit were sent to the moon: Luna I, II and Luna III. Then April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin was the first man sent into space, at that time the Soviets are the masters of space. Nevertheless, a series of failed launches, and reduced funding will result in the loss of their supremacy space, their last success being the first output of a cosmonaut in the vacuum of space in 1965.
While the space program was on the brink on several occasions in 1961 (failure to launch several rockets) and 1967 (death of three of their astronauts), they still managed to overcome obstacles and they ended up sending astronauts around the moon in1968, and on July 16, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man walked on the moon.
Therefore the Americans dealt a decisive blow to the Soviets and won a race technological premise of the decline of the USSR.

II) Issues of the space race in the Cold War

A) Military and political issues

The main objective of the space race is military, it has significantly increased the reach of nuclear missiles (the missile crisis in Cuba in 1962 is a direct consequence of the advanced technology of the space conquest). Satellites allowed the espionnage by taking detailed photographs of any spot on earth from space, but also the wireless remote, and they occured very largely into the program "star wars" of President Reagan. The space race allowed the discovery of Kevlar, the laser and dozens of other innovations for military use.
the Technological advance in the space race has enabled to have a significant psychological advantage over their enemies (Sputnik was in evidence). The United States and the Soviet Union both joined the race to prove the world that its system was the best. They found out that space was a good way to demonstrate this superiority. Especially since this race has allowed everyone to considerably increase their prestige and indirectly their influences on the world ( with propaganda ).

B) Economic and scientist issues

The economic spin-offs and science that has allowed the space race are considerable and exceed anything you can imagine. In fact, hundreds to billions of dollars spent were not wasted: it spent $ 1 $ 3 reported a yield to 300%. By themselves, the technologies developed by NASA resulted in some 1,600 innovations in other areas, often far from their original aim. As for the European Space Agency(ESA), its technology transfer program boasted more than 200 applications derived.Solar panels, titanium pump ventricular assist, GPS, survival blanket, Medical Imaging,Teflon, composite materials, fireproof textiles were only a small part of the technological contributions to the space conquest . These innovations have saved tens of thousands of lives and improved millions of lives while only 22 astronauts have died on a mission. Millions of jobs have been directly or indirectly created by the space race, NASA today employs almost 500,000 people in the United States.

While the U.S. space program has been abandoned by the Obama administration ( in 2010 ) and that the sending of American astronauts will be through the Soyuz rocket, the question of American supremacy in space has been challenged by emerging powers like China or India. The States might be able to get out of the current space race crisis by creating a large space program such as the Mars program or by implementing new technological innovations.
