Hi, today I'm going to talk about places and forms of power.

First, I will define the notion of power : it is the capacity to influence public opinion or the ability to do something or act in a particular way, to control others. Places represents building or institutions.

To illustrate this notion, we can wonder what is the power of young people. First, I will speak about punk rock and then, about Greta Thunberg.

Punk rock is a music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s. He is derived from rock and associated with the punk movement of that same era.

In the United States, before the 1970s, the word punk, with an obscure and centuries-old etymology, was commonly used to describe "a gangster or a thug."

The term "punk" was first used by American rock critics in the early 1970s to describe 1960s garage bands and subsequent acts and erstood to be their stylistic successors but it’s not the case at all : the roots of punk are found in local scenes which tend to reject any connection with mainstream music, like the comtemporary mainstream 70’s rock. The Clash, for example, said : " No Elvis, Beatles, or Rolling Stones in 1977 "
From punk came the idea of independent label, which is synonym of an independent production of discs, in other words not related to big companies of music industry.

The movement taked the name developed from 1974 to 1976 with acts such as TelevisionPatti Smith, and the Ramones in New York City; the Sex Pistolsthe Clash, and the Damned in London, which was the first to use this music style.

Typical punk rock instrumentation includes one or two electric guitars, bass, and drums, as well as vocals.

Lyrics are often shouted rather than sung. The vocal approach is characterized by a lack of variety; changes in notes, volumes, or tones are relatively rare. The musicians comment social and political affairs.
The lack of syncope on the drums gives rise to punk dance in several forms, the characteristic style being originally the pogo (dance where everyone jumps in a disorderly way while jostling)

For exemple, Career Opportunities is a punk music by The Clash speaking about unemployment.

The main goal is to scandalize and shock the general public.

Some punk musicians have adopted a nihilistic attitude which can summarized by the Sex Pistols slogan, "No Future".

As 1977 approached, punk rapidly became a major cultural phenomenon in the UK. It spawned a punk subculture expressing youthful rebellion through distinctive styles of clothing (such as deliberately offensive T-shirts, leather jackets, studded or spiked bands but also their hairstyle, like we see in this picture).
Tattoos, piercings and accessories made of metal or spades have become increasingly common elements of punk fashion both among fans and musicians.

Punk rock spawned also a variety of anti-authoritarian ideologies.

The first wave of punk rock was "aggressively modern" and differed from what came before.

In the late 1970s, punk experienced a second wave as new acts that were not active during its formative years adopted the style.

During the 80s, punk music has faster and more aggressive sub-genders like hardcore punk , street punk, and anarcho-punk. They became the predominant styles of punk rock.

Now, I will speak you about Greta Thunberg. It is an activist environmentalist for the fight against global warming. She is 17 years old. She came in front of the United Nations in New York on the occasion of Climate Summit through her capacity to express herself about climate change with the good words. She said that most of adults are responsable of climate change and global worming. People are suffering, animals are dying and whole ecosystems are diseppearing and she said that adults are just speaking about money and stories of economic growth without end. Before, she called to school strike for climate : more than two thousands events are organized in the entire world the 15th of march of 2019 with a number of 300000 students. Here, the power of Greta Thunberg is the capacity to bring people together against an idea, to gather them against the latter.

To conclude, youth have the power to influence the end of inequalities and climate change and to express his rebellion or his outrage through words or music and its sub-cultures . I think that youth as also a lot of ideas and many creativity and energy to shape a better world. In parenteses, I think also that Greta Thunberg abuse of her power to become famous, she makes theatre with her manner of speaking.
