Traduire le texte suivant en anglaisDarwin fut conscient du caractère révolutionnaire de sa pensée. Cela le fit hésiter aussi bien vis-à-vis des autorités scientifiques que des autorités religieuses. La parution de son œuvre maîtresse en 1859 : L'Origine des espèces (en anglais On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection), provoqua des réactions passionnées bien que Darwin n'ait pas cherché à être particulièrement provocateur puisqu'il cite encore le Créateur.
Ce n'est que plus tard qu'il s'exprime clairement sur l'homme avec The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex. Bien que les notes de ses carnets indiquent de nettes options matérialistes dès 1837, il ne se déclare agnostique qu'en 1876. Les réactions de l'Église furent catégoriques, l'origine animale de l'homme ne pouvait qu'être en contradiction avec la bible et la doctrine catholique.
Dès 1860 le concile provincial de Cologne, s'oppose à la thèse darwinienne et déclare: « Nos parents ont été créés par Dieu immédiatement. C'est pourquoi nous déclarons tout à fait contraire à l'écriture sainte et à la foi, l'opinion de ceux qui n'ont pas honte d'affirmer que l'homme, quant au corps, est le fruit de la transformation spontanée d'une nature imparfaite en d'autres de plus en plus parfaites jusqu'à la nature humaine actuelle ».
En 1860, les scientifiques Joseph Dalton Hooker et Thomas Henry Huxley qui défendaient la thèse scientifique de Darwin, débattent face à l'évêque d'Oxford Samuel Wilberforce qui défendait une thèse fixiste conforme à l'orthodoxie anglicane.
