I’m going to talk about the notion “Ideas of Progress”. First I would like to give a definition of this notion :  The progress is the idea that the world and the society can evolve positively in terms of sciences, technology, modernization, living condition and other things.

In class, we have worked on the Space Race. The Space Race is a contest or a war between communist countries and Western capitalist countries. They want to be the best of Space progress. The Space Race take place at the same time as the Cold War. It begins between USA and Soviet Union. In this period, each country tried to show he was superior in lots of domains.

So, We can wonder if the Space Race brought lots of progress.

First, it’s obvious that during the Space Race there are many scientific progress. The most advanced were made in space domain. In the documentary called “The Space Race”  we discover that there are a lot of spacecraft launched in space. Each rocket realized a different challenge. In 1957, the soviet union launched Sputnik II and proved that a living being could survive during a space flight. There are also the first man in orbit the Earth and his name is Yuri Gagarin. In 1969, the USA has succeeded the impossible : launch a man on the moon. This breakthrough was realized by Neil Amstrong and became the first man who walk on the moon. In the film “Hidden Figures”, we can see the construction of rocket like the shape, the mass or the propulsion. There are also progress in math to calculate the trajectories of the spacecrafts. In this period, there are the appearance of computers and TV.

Secondly, I’m going to talk about the social progress during the Space Race. Unlike scientific progress, the social progress didn’t really evolve. We can say there are a lack of social progress. Thus in the film “Hidden Figures” we see this lack. In USA at this time, the racial segregation and the discrimination against women were very present. There are different taps or toilet for black and white people. Moreover, the colored people must to eat in their own cafeteria apart white people. In the film, there are three main characters, three colored women. Each woman shown that social progress has even evolve. Katherine Goble was a math prodigy and she became the first colored woman who work with white men at NASA. Then, Mary Jackson was the NASA’s first black female aeronautical engineer. She had to take engineering classes in a white school. Dorothy Vaughan was the first colored woman to be IBM computing lab supervisor. Besides these women, there are some people demonstrate against segregation to raise awareness about this issue.

To conclude, during the Space Race there is a discrepancy between scientific and social progress. The scientific advances were very fast and was very present. While social progress were unusual because of segregation and discrimination. Despite that, some people want the equality for everybody.

But this difference of progress is still topical because USA is the most creative country in the world with NASA or MIT but there is a lot of racism yet.
